EP:60 - DITCH YOUR HOLIDAY FOOD RULES

Oh the holidays. They can be loaded for so many reasons. And for women, if we remove the whole stress of family expectations and getting the right gifts for everyone, having a beautifully decorated house, and the perfect Christmas card... (as if that isn’t enough pressure on it’s own) … then we get to have this secondary dialogue right below the surface that is on call 24/7 it seems like.
Our food police.
A lot of fear around food seems to creep in during the holiday season because of all the other stress. It’s the perfect go-to to make us feeling like we are in control.
And our food police keep is stuck in diet mentality.
And we get stuck in diet mentality during the holidays because it’s common place language. Everyone is talking about it.
Everyone is making sure you know they are on their “best” behavior.
We’re supposed to enjoy the holidays but it’s a catch 22.
It’s like we want to enjoy the holidays, make some cookies but then are terrified to actually eat the cookies themselves. We’re not actually ever able to relax around food.
And let’s remember the agenda of diet mentality. To earn love. And what better season to trigger this need for love and acceptance than the holidays.
If you have heard yourself say outloud of think…
“If I eat this dessert, I need to exercise more tomorrow”
“I was bad today.”
“I cheated today.”
“It’s ok I’ll start being good after the New Year.”
“I should do a quick cleanse before Christmas.”
“If I didn’t exercise today, I need to watch what I eat today.”
“I should watch the amount of sugar intake I’m consuming.”
“I should drink a skinny cocktail instead of a regular one. It has less calories.”
“I can’t believe she is eating that”
“I wonder how many calories or fat this casserole has.”
“I’m scared I’ll gain weight through the holidays.”
You’re caught in the diet mentality holiday thinking trap.
And you’re not a peace with food if:
You are still counting calories
You diet/cleanse/fix etc
You skip dessert and consider yourself “good”
If you ate the dessert you talk about how “bad” you’ve been, or how you’ve cheated and have to do penance at the gym tomorrow for it
You read all the labels
You restrict certain foods
You skip meals
You judge people for what they choose to eat
You don’t trust yourself with food
If you cringe when you think about the words pleasure, enjoyment, desire connected to the word food.
So in order to silence our food police we need to challenge our food rules.
At the end of the day, we are the only thinker of our thoughts. We actually have control over what tape we put on repeat.
